Hit Dice

From Shatterspark
Constitution HD
-1 or lower d4
0 or 1 d6
2 or 3 d8
4 or 5 d10
6 or higher d12

Each creature has a number of Hit Point Dice, usually called Hit Dice or HD. Hit points represent shorter-term resilience against damage, while Hit Dice represent longer-term resilience against exhaustion.

  • Your Hit Dice. As a protag, you have a number of Hit Dice equal to your skill level. The size of your Hit Dice depend on your Constitution, as shown in the adjacent table. If your Constitution is lower than 0, all your Hit Dice are d4. If your Constitution is higher than 5, all your Hit Dice are d12.
  • Maximum Hit Points. Your hit point maximum equals your skill level × the size of your Hit Dice. For example if you have 3d6 Hit Dice (Level 3 with a Constitution of 0 or 1), your hit point maximum is 18.
  • Expending Hit Dice. You can willingly expend Hit Dice at the end of a break to recover more hit points. Some features enable you to expend Hit Dice for other benefits.
  • Losing Hit Dice. Exhaustion from an extreme climate or other hazard can force you to lose Hit Dice. If you are forced to lose one or more Hit Dice when you have none remaining, roll one of your Hit Dice and reduce your hit point maximum by an amount equal to the result.
  • Restoring Hit Dice. When you finish camping, regain a number of Hit Dice equal to 1 + your Constitution. When you finish Downtime, regain all Hit Dice.
